Role Context
The Head of History and Politics role supports the academic leadership and continued development of the department at Yasmina British Academy. The position focuses on strengthening teaching quality, improving student achievement, reviewing schemes of work, and ensuring that learners receive strong preparation for IGCSE, IB DP, enrichment activities, and revision pathways.
This role requires a leader who can use data effectively, identify underachievement, support staff performance, and create a purposeful learning environment where students build historical knowledge, political awareness, analytical thinking, research skills, and confidence in extended writing.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the History and Politics department in line with the school vision, academic aims, and high standards of achievement.
* Develop and implement departmental policies and practices that support effective teaching and learning.
* Establish, monitor, and evaluate short, medium, and long-term development plans for the department.
* Use student data to identify underachievement and create targeted action plans to improve progress.
* Analyse school and departmental data to support policy development, self-evaluation, and improvement planning.
* Ensure relevant schemes of work are developed, reviewed, and evaluated across year groups and courses.
* Maintain curriculum coverage, continuity, and progression for all students across History and Politics.
* Provide suitable provision for SEN, POD, gifted and talented, and EAL students.
* Set clear expectations for staff in relation to achievement, teaching quality, learning standards, and behaviour.
* Evaluate teaching and learning across the department and act on areas requiring improvement.
* Support effective preparation for IGCSE, IB DP, booster sessions, revision programmes, and enrichment activities.
* Ensure the department contributes meaningfully to the school’s CAS programme and wider academic life.
* Performance manage team members in line with the school performance management policy.
* Support efficient deployment of staff, learning resources, classrooms, and departmental facilities.
* Maintain effective control of departmental resources and CapEx budget requirements.
* Create a stimulating humanities learning environment that encourages enquiry, debate, research, and critical thinking.
* Work collaboratively with colleagues, school leaders, parents, and the wider school community.
* Uphold safeguarding, child protection, professional conduct, and school policy expectations at all times.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s degree in History, Politics, Humanities, Education, or a closely related subject.
* PGCE or another recognised teacher qualification.
* Minimum 6 years of teaching experience.
* Experience teaching the UK curriculum.
* Strong subject knowledge across History, Politics, humanities learning, assessment, and curriculum progression.
* Proven ability to raise standards and close learning gaps through effective strategies.
* Demonstrated leadership experience at department, subject, or school level.
* Ability to lead staff, manage performance, and support professional growth.
* Strong understanding of data analysis, academic intervention, and student progress tracking.
* Experience supporting learners with SEN, POD, EAL, and high ability needs.
* Commitment to extensive enrichment provision and student-centred education.
* Passionate, caring, collaborative, and reflective approach to teaching and leadership.
* Genuine understanding of UAE cultural values and the expectations of the Abu Dhabi school environment.
