Role Context

The Head of Physical Education - Sports role supports the strategic direction, curriculum quality, staff development, and student progress of the PE department at Yasmina British Academy. The position carries responsibility for strengthening teaching and learning, leading departmental improvement, preparing students for examinations, and ensuring that PE and sport provision continues to meet high academic and practical standards.

This leadership role requires a strong balance of classroom excellence, sports curriculum expertise, data-led decision making, staff mentoring, parent communication, quality assurance, and wider academy contribution. The successful candidate will help raise the profile of PE, support student participation, and maintain a culture of achievement, teamwork, wellbeing, and professional growth.

Key Responsibilities

* Lead the strategic direction and continued development of the Physical Education department.
* Set a clear departmental vision aligned with academy improvement priorities and student achievement targets.
* Analyse data, plan improvement actions, monitor outcomes, and contribute to departmental and school self-evaluation.
* Develop policies and practices that support high-quality outcomes for students across all key stages.
* Further strengthen an outstanding teaching and learning culture within PE and sport.
* Lead curriculum development, resourcing, schemes of work, and subject planning across relevant year groups and courses.
* Ensure suitable provision is in place for SEN, POD, gifted and talented, and EAL students.
* Prepare students effectively for GCSE, A Level, BTEC Sport Level 2, BTEC Sport Level 3, and other assessments.
* Organise effective assessments, moderation, data collation, and analysis in line with quality assurance procedures.
* Monitor student progress through assessment data, home learning, student voice, lesson observations, work reviews, and parent engagement.
* Identify underachieving students and create clear action plans to support improvement.
* Lead and manage department staff, including staffing needs, recruitment support, performance appraisal, and professional development.
* Identify individual training needs through performance management and support staff development.
* Delegate responsibilities appropriately and establish constructive working relationships across the department.
* Support Heads of Subject where applicable and provide strategic direction across subject areas.
* Promote team spirit through recognition, collaboration, high expectations, and shared goals.
* Lead marketing activities that raise the profile of PE and sport across the academy.
* Organise key events, extra-curricular activities, and sports opportunities that increase student engagement.
* Communicate effectively with parents through reports, parent teacher consultations, emails, letters, and school communication channels.
* Represent the department in cross-curricular committees and wider academy initiatives.
* Work with the senior leadership team to ensure departmental systems support academy policies and outstanding practice.
* Serve as an academic mentor or form tutor when required.
* Take part in open evenings, parent consultations, partner academy events, staff duties, cover arrangements, and examination invigilation.
* Follow academy expectations for safeguarding, health and safety, acceptable use, professional conduct, dress code, and equal opportunities.

Ideal Profile

* Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Sport, Education, or a related subject.
* PGCE or another recognised teaching qualification.
* Minimum 6 years of experience leading the English National Curriculum.
* Strong GCSE and A Level PE experience.
* BTEC Sport Level 2 and Level 3 experience.
* Previous experience working with students for whom English is not their first language.
* Proven ability to lead department improvement, curriculum development, and student achievement.
