Role Context
The Design and Technology Technician will provide practical and technical support across workshops, classrooms, and specialist learning spaces at Muna British Academy. The role ensures that machinery, tools, materials, personal protective equipment, and project resources are prepared correctly and available when required for teaching.
A strong emphasis is placed on workshop safety, preventive maintenance, material preparation, stock control, and the responsible operation of CAD-CAM and CNC equipment. By maintaining organized and compliant facilities, the technician will enable teachers to deliver practical learning safely while giving students access to well-managed resources and technology.
Key Responsibilities
* Prepare workshops, tools, machinery, and materials before Design and Technology lessons.
* Ensure students have access to suitable personal protective equipment for each practical activity.
* Follow school health and safety policies and maintain safe working conditions throughout workshops and specialist classrooms.
* Support departmental trial projects to identify technical issues before activities are introduced to students.
* Assist with annual health and safety checks and maintain required records and documentation.
* Set up specialist equipment for group or individual student activities as directed by teaching staff.
* Provide appropriate technical assistance during lessons while working within guidance provided by the class teacher.
* Respond to practical questions from students and provide technical feedback that supports safe progress.
* Prepare project materials in required quantities before lessons, including cutting, gluing, and other preparation tasks.
* Produce jigs, moulds, patterns, and reusable project components where required.
* Organize student work and ensure completed or drying projects are stored safely.
* Maintain orderly storage of tools and equipment with clear identification and labelling.
* Monitor consumable materials and workshop stock levels.
* Place orders for tools, equipment, and materials when authorized and ensure deliveries are checked, unpacked, and stored correctly.
* Inform the Head of Department in advance when additional stock or replacement resources are required.
* Complete daily checks of workshop machinery and specialist classroom equipment.
* Carry out routine cleaning, lubrication, blade changes, adjustments, and minor maintenance within approved competence levels.
* Maintain workshop maintenance logs to provide an accurate record of equipment condition and servicing.
* Inspect and maintain hand tools including hacksaws, coping saws, planes, chisels, drill bits, and marking tools.
* Replace, reset, or sharpen blades and cutting tools when required.
* Coordinate annual machinery servicing and maintenance undertaken by approved contractors.
* Maintain accurate electronic records of resources and substances covered by COSHH requirements.
* Highlight safe handling, storage, and usage requirements for controlled workshop materials.
* Support teachers in creating displays for Design and Technology exhibitions, school events, and classroom environments.
* Help maintain Art and Design Technology presentation areas for on-site and off-site exhibitions.
* Ensure students leave workshops and studios clean, organized, and free from avoidable hazards.
* Remove excess waste material and maintain clear floors to reduce trip and slip risks.
* Clean machines and work surfaces so facilities are ready and safe for subsequent classes.

* Bachelor\'s degree.
