Role Context
The Swim Instructor - Water Safety role supports the physical education and wellbeing programme at Yas American Academy by teaching swimming lessons, supervising students around the pool, and helping learners develop safe, confident, and technically sound swimming skills. The instructor will work with students across the school, adapt lessons for different ability levels, and maintain a safe poolside environment at all times.
This position also includes coaching, competition preparation, extra-curricular swimming activities, parent communication, event organisation, and close coordination with teachers, classroom assistants, swimming assistants, and school staff.
Key Responsibilities
* Teach swimming lessons to students across the school with a focus on skill development and water safety.
* Plan and deliver structured swimming sessions for different ages, confidence levels, and swimming abilities.
* Maintain constant supervision of children in and around the pool to ensure safety during all activities.
* Supervise and support the swimming assistant to ensure smooth lesson delivery and safe poolside routines.
* Coach students in swimming techniques, fitness, discipline, sportsmanship, and competition readiness.
* Develop training programmes that support technique, stamina, confidence, and safe participation in water activities.
* Monitor student progress and provide clear feedback to students, parents, teachers, and school management.
* Enforce pool rules, follow safety procedures, and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
* Organise and participate in swimming galas, competitions, school sports events, and swimming-related activities.
* Lead extra-curricular swimming programmes that extend student participation beyond regular lessons.
* Coordinate with class teachers and classroom assistants before, during, and after swimming sessions.
* Ensure a staff member is always present to monitor children in the water while lessons are taking place.
* Manage swimming event logistics, equipment needs, team participation, and poolside arrangements.
* Communicate professionally with parents and guardians about student progress, achievements, and safety concerns.
* Liaise with external organisations such as competition organisers, swimming federations, and health and safety authorities when required.
* Promote school swimming programmes, health initiatives, and water safety awareness within the wider school community.
* Uphold safeguarding, child protection, risk management, and professional conduct expectations at all times.
Ideal Profile
* UAE approved Swimming Coach Certificate.
* First Aid Certificate and CPR knowledge.
* Qualified to teach swimming.
* Qualified lifeguard.
* Competent instructor able to support the needs of all learners.
* Strong expertise in teaching swimming techniques and water safety to students of different ages and abilities.
* Knowledge of pool operations, risk management, normal operating procedures, and emergency operating procedures.
* Ability to plan, deliver, and assess swimming lessons, competitions, and extra-curricular programmes.
* Confident in supervising, mentoring, and coordinating swimming assistants.
* Strong communication skills for working with students, parents, classroom assistants, teachers, and school staff.
