Role Context
The Rolling Stock Engineer will
The role covers the complete train architecture, including carbody, bogies, propulsion, braking, doors, HVAC, auxiliary power, couplers, gangways, wiring, interiors, and onboard control systems. Successful delivery will depend on close integration with signalling, platform screen doors, telecommunications, traction power, stations, depot facilities, and civil infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
* Support the Lead Rolling Stock Engineer with technical assurance and delivery of passenger rolling stock.
* Provide specialist advice to engineering, construction, project controls, systems integration, testing, and client teams.
* Review rolling stock system and subsystem designs submitted by the Design Build contractor.
* Verify compliance with contractual requirements, technical specifications, approved standards, and client performance criteria.
* Develop and review interface specifications supporting rolling stock supplier design and system integration.
* Coordinate rolling stock interfaces with signalling, platform screen doors, telecommunications, traction power, stations, depots, and civil infrastructure.
* Review vehicle configuration, train formation, passenger capacity, operating performance, and system compatibility.
* Evaluate rolling stock architecture for at-grade, elevated, and underground railway operations.
* Review design specifications for carbody structures, bogies, suspension systems, braking, propulsion, auxiliary power, and train control.
* Assess HVAC systems, passenger doors, gangways, couplers, wiring, interiors, panels, and associated train equipment.
* Review automatic train control and onboard interfaces associated with automatic railway operations.
* Monitor technical design development and identify issues that could affect safety, quality, schedule, cost, or system acceptance.
* Coordinate with Project Controls teams to track design deliverables, review schedules, and monitor supplier progress.
* Maintain visibility of technical milestones and advise project leadership of emerging rolling stock risks.
* Analyse RAMS performance against client specifications and railway safety requirements.
* Review reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety evidence associated with rolling stock systems.
* Assess rolling stock operation and maintenance requirements throughout the asset lifecycle.
* Review maintainability provisions, access requirements, replacement strategies, and maintenance interfaces.
* Support assessment of train performance, passenger loading, operating scenarios, and system capacity.
* Investigate rolling stock faults, design discrepancies, interface conflicts, and performance concerns.
* Facilitate technical resolution between the rolling stock supplier and interfacing system contractors.
* Review technical submissions, calculations, reports, drawings, specifications, and compliance documentation.
* Monitor design changes and verify that modifications are properly assessed for system and safety impacts.
* Participate in design reviews, interface meetings, technical workshops, and systems integration sessions.
* Conduct site inspections and technical visits to verify rolling stock-related works, installation quality, and progress.
* Support inspections of depot interfaces, train equipment, and supporting rail systems where required.
* Review evidence supporting testing, commissioning, verification, validation, and acceptance.
* Support Factory Acceptance Testing and other supplier testing activities where included within the project scope.
* Verify rolling stock compliance with applicable railway approvals, codes, and international standards.
* Support asset acceptance by ensuring technical documentation, testing evidence, and outstanding issues are properly controlled.
* Maintain accurate records covering rolling stock design decisions, interfaces, technical issues, reviews, and acceptance status.
* Prepare technical reports, review comments, progress updates, and engineering recommendations.
* Support the resolution and closure of design comments, NCRs, technical queries, and interface issues.
* Coordinate with client representatives and provide clear technical advice on rolling stock performance and compliance.
* Maintain focus on passenger safety, system reliability, maintainability, interoperability, and operational readiness throughout project delivery.
Ideal Profile
The position requires a degree, diploma, or professional qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or another closely related railway engineering discipline.
Candidates should bring at least 12 years of mechanical engineering experience, including substantial technical involvement in rolling stock design and delivery on large, multidisciplinary railway programs.
Strong practical knowledge of passenger rolling stock is essential, covering train architecture, carbody structures, bogies, braking, propulsion, HVAC, door systems, auxiliary power, wiring, couplers, gangways, interiors, and associated onboard equipment.
The successful candidate should understand railway system integration and the interfaces between rolling stock, signalling, platform screen doors, telecommunications, traction power, depot facilities, and civil infrastructure.
Experience reviewing rolling stock supplier designs and assessing compliance with employer or client requirements is important.
Candidates should have a strong understanding of RAMS principles and railway approvals together with knowledge of standards including EN 50126, EN 50129, IEC 61133, NFPA 130, UIC 615, UIC 515, EN 12663, and EN 15827.
Experience involving Bombardier or Siemens rolling stock platforms is highly desirable.
Knowledge of railway interiors and panel systems, rail communication principles, and overhead traction power systems will strengthen the candidate profile.
Chartered Engineer status is preferred and will support the technical assurance responsibilities associated with this role.
Strong client-facing capability, technical judgment, written reporting, multidisciplinary coordination, and fluent English communication are essential.
