Role Context
The Alignment Engineer - Railway Design will lead and coordinate railway alignment development from concept through detailed design on major rail infrastructure projects in Riyadh. The position requires strong understanding of railway route planning, corridor constraints, track geometry, design standards, constructability, and interface management. By reviewing alignment options, validating technical deliverables, managing design changes, and coordinating multiple disciplines, the role helps create practical railway corridors that support long-term operations, construction efficiency, regulatory approval, and project delivery objectives.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and coordinate railway alignment design activities from concept design through detailed design and approved technical deliverables.
* Oversee route selection studies and evaluate technical, environmental, social, operational, land, utility, and constructability constraints.
* Review horizontal and vertical alignment proposals to confirm compliance with international railway standards, local requirements, and project design criteria.
* Coordinate with civil, track, structures, systems, geotechnical, environmental, utilities, land acquisition, and multidisciplinary design teams.
* Ensure railway corridor design is integrated with surrounding infrastructure, stations, structures, earthworks, drainage, access routes, utilities, and operational requirements.
* Manage interfaces with stakeholders, regulatory authorities, third parties, land acquisition teams, consultants, contractors, and internal project teams.
* Review and validate alignment drawings, technical reports, design models, corridor studies, route optimization records, and design submissions.
* Implement quality assurance and quality control processes for alignment-related design outputs.
* Participate in technical meetings, design reviews, workshops, coordination sessions, site visits, and stakeholder discussions.
* Represent alignment engineering matters and help resolve technical concerns related to route feasibility, design standards, corridor constraints, and constructability.
* Identify alignment-related risks and support proactive mitigation strategies throughout the design and delivery lifecycle.
* Manage design changes and maintain proper documentation, traceability, approval records, and governance for technical decisions.
* Promote value engineering and innovation to improve alignment efficiency, reduce constraints, optimize corridor development, and support cost-effective delivery.
* Support project teams in resolving complex railway alignment, corridor planning, track geometry, and infrastructure integration challenges.
* Coordinate design information between infrastructure teams and all entities involved in rail design and delivery.
* Maintain clear records of review comments, technical decisions, design assumptions, risk items, stakeholder inputs, and interface requirements.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Railway Engineering, or a related discipline.
* Minimum 10 years of experience in railway route design, alignment design, corridor planning, or major linear infrastructure design.
* Experience delivering large-scale conventional railway, long-distance rail, metro, transit, or transportation infrastructure projects.
* Strong knowledge of railway alignment principles, track geometry requirements, route optimization methods, and international railway design standards.
* Ability to review horizontal alignments, vertical alignments, corridor models, design reports, drawings, calculations, and technical submissions.
