Role Context
The Senior Power Supply Engineer - Rail will provide technical leadership for railway electrification and traction power systems across a major infrastructure program in Riyadh. The position requires deep knowledge of AC and DC traction systems, substations, high-voltage and low-voltage rail power networks, rectifiers, transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protection systems, SCADA, PLC, overhead catenary systems, third-rail systems, and commissioning requirements. By guiding design, construction, testing, troubleshooting, and performance verification, the role helps ensure safe, reliable, compliant, and fully integrated power supply systems for rail operations.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage Traction Power Supply System construction activities and support successful delivery of railway electrification works.
* Ensure traction power and electrical activities are executed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, method statements, project procedures, and applicable standards.
* Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentoring to engineers, technicians, contractors, and project teams involved in traction power and railway electrical systems.
* Lead electrical engineering activities including requirements analysis, specification development, interface definition, component selection, simulation, and power system design.
* Develop engineering calculations, technical models, design solutions, and performance assessments for railway power supply systems.
* Prepare power system studies for AC and DC electrified railway systems.
* Perform computer simulations and analyses including load flow, short-circuit studies, motor-starting analysis, and protection coordination studies.
* Conduct site investigations and inspections at substations, traction power facilities, railway corridors, wayside locations, and electrical equipment areas.
* Prepare technical proposals, engineering reports, cost estimates, design assessments, and technical recommendations as required.
* Lead installation, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance verification of traction power and electrical equipment.
* Develop and deliver technical presentations, progress updates, engineering reports, and stakeholder briefings.
* Provide technical leadership for AC and DC railway electrification system design projects.
* Review complete project documentation including design packages, as-built documentation, operation and maintenance manuals, installation procedures, and commissioning plans.
* Design and review power supply assemblies to confirm compliance with project specifications, technical standards, and performance requirements.
* Verify that traction power designs meet applicable safety, operational, regulatory, maintainability, and reliability standards.
* Develop practical solutions for production, reliability, performance, interface, and operational challenges affecting rail power systems.
* Prepare engineering documentation and technical deliverables that support quality project execution and design assurance.
* Facilitate technical design reviews with engineering teams, contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, and project stakeholders.
* Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews, interface meetings, systems integration workshops, and rail systems coordination sessions.
* Support testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, system integration, and acceptance activities for traction power systems and related electrical equipment.
* Coordinate traction power interfaces with SCADA, PLC systems, protection systems, signaling, telecoms, rolling stock, track, civil works, and operations teams.
* Review technical risks, power system constraints, installation issues, commissioning gaps, and non-compliance items, then recommend corrective actions.
* Support safe and reliable delivery of substations, converters, rectifiers, switchgear, transformers, cable systems, protection equipment, and wayside electrical infrastructure.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
* Minimum 15 years of experience in Traction Power Supply System engineering, preferably on metro, railway, rail transit, or high-speed rail projects.
* Proven experience delivering traction power and railway electrification systems on major infrastructure or transportation programs.
* Strong knowledge of high-voltage and low-voltage power systems associated with railway and rail transit networks.
* Comprehensive understanding of national and international standards related to railway power systems, electrical safety, and rail operations.
* Experience in the design, construction, implementation, testing, and commissioning of AC and DC traction power systems.
* Experience with 600V and 750V DC traction power substations and 25kV railway electrification systems.
* Knowledge of frequency converters, stray current mitigation systems, wayside cable infrastructure, and rail corridor electrical systems.
* Experience with circuit breakers, switchgear, transformers, rectifiers, protection systems, and electrical distribution equipment.
* Strong knowledge of SCADA, PLC, railway protection systems, control systems, and power system monitoring requirements.
* Understanding of overhead catenary systems and third-rail electrification systems.
* Experience conducting load flow, short-circuit, motor-starting, and protection coordination studies.
* Knowledge of power electronics, control systems, protection systems, and multi-modular converter technologies is advantageous.
* Experience on major metro, transit, railway, or transportation infrastructure projects is preferred.
* Strong leadership, technical reporting, stakeholder management, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to lead technical reviews, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and resolve complex electrical interface issues.
