What Does a Head of Physical Education Do?
As Head of Physical Education, you will lead a team of dedicated PE teachers in delivering a broad, high-quality curriculum across all key stages, including IGCSE and A-Level. You will shape the school’s physical education programme, nurture sporting talent, and promote student well-being, resilience, and teamwork through sport and physical activity.
What Are the Key Responsibilities?
- Lead the planning, delivery, and development of the PE curriculum from FS1 to Sixth Form
- Promote excellence in teaching and learning through collaboration, coaching, and performance monitoring
- Organize school-wide sports events, inter-house competitions, and represent GEMS at inter-school tournaments
- Drive student participation in sports, health, and fitness initiatives across all age groups
- Ensure students have access to inclusive physical education, tailored to diverse abilities and interests
- Oversee department assessment strategies and analyze data to support progress and outcomes
- Champion school sports as a platform for teamwork, leadership, and holistic student development
- Coordinate with external providers, coaches, and local sporting bodies for enrichment opportunities
- Manage the department’s budget, resources, and sports facilities
- Support the pastoral and academic progress of students through active engagement in school life
- Collaborate with senior leaders to align the PE vision with whole-school priorities
What Skills Are Needed for a Head of PE in Dubai?
Education:
- B.Ed. or Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or a relevant subject with PGCE/PGDE or equivalent teaching qualification
Experience:
- Minimum of 3–5 years of PE teaching experience, with a proven record of leadership
- Experience teaching GCSE and A-Level PE (or equivalent) within a British curriculum school
- Previous experience managing a PE team and organizing competitive sports events is highly valued
Skills:
- Passion for sports and youth development
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Deep knowledge of the UK National Curriculum for PE and best practices in coaching
- Ability to inspire a love of sport in students of all ages and abilities
- Enthusiastic, reflective, and solution-oriented educator
