What Does a Research Engineer – Robotics Do?
This position is responsible for developing customized UAVs and UGVs with integrated sensors, actuators, and safety mechanisms. The successful candidate will focus on enhancing the operational and navigational capabilities of robotic platforms, including flight, mobility, and stability using robust systems like RGB-D cameras, GPS-RTK, redundant autopilots, and long-distance communication tools.
What Are the Key Responsibilities?
- Design, develop, and integrate sensors, actuators, and onboard computers for UAV and UGV platforms
- Implement control systems and safety features to optimize performance in real-time applications
- Build and maintain specialized hardware and embedded systems for robotic vehicles
- Utilize simulation platforms such as Gazebo or physics engines for performance testing
- Collaborate with researchers and lab members to support ongoing robotics projects
- Assist in maintaining experimental setups in RISC Lab’s high-tech Kinesis workspace
What Qualifications Are Required?
Education:
- Master’s Degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
Required Skills:
- Strong background in robotics, embedded systems, and mechatronics
- Hands-on experience with autonomous robots, control systems, and integration of UAV/UGV components
- Familiarity with software platforms including Robot Operating Systems (ROS), Ardupilot, and simulation tools like Gazebo
- Proficiency in design software such as SolidWorks is preferred
- Ability to work independently in a research-oriented, collaborative environment
