A Lead Data Engineer plays a critical role in designing, developing, and optimizing high-quality data pipelines to drive analytics and business intelligence solutions. This role empowers data-driven decision-making by leveraging deep expertise in data architecture, engineering, analysis, and reporting, with a foundational understanding of data science techniques. The ideal candidate will be a skilled data and software engineer experienced in creating data products that enhance analytics capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, optimize, and maintain data architecture and pipelines aligned with ETL principles and business goals
- Solve complex data challenges to deliver actionable insights that drive business success
- Develop and implement data products for analytics and data science teams to enhance efficiency and productivity
- Mentor and advise data and analytics professionals on best practices in data engineering
- Foster a culture of collaboration, standardization, and operational efficiency in data solutions
- Evaluate, implement, and deploy emerging technologies to improve team productivity in analytic data engineering
- Develop communication and training plans for analytic data engineering capabilities, standards, and processes
- Collaborate with business analysts and solution architects to design strategic data architectures for enterprise initiatives
- Contribute to the development and delivery of data science training as part of the advanced analytics and digital academy
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or Engineering preferred
- Minimum 5 years of experience in data engineering or architecture (7+ years preferred)
- Expertise in SQL and experience with programming languages such as Python, R, or Scala
- Experience developing and maintaining data warehouses in big data environments
- Strong domain knowledge in metals, mining, energy, heavy industry, oil & gas, or a combination of these sectors
- Proficiency in data analytics and programming languages such as R, Python, Spark, Java, and Scala
- Hands-on experience with BI tools like Tableau, Power BI, Looker, Shiny, or Qlik
- Experience developing solutions on cloud platforms such as Azure, Spark, or Google Cloud (preferred)
- Strong background in data architecture, including data retention policies, performance monitoring, and infrastructure scaling
- Knowledge of data governance, warehousing, structured and unstructured data, and ETL tools like Informatica, Alteryx, or SAP Data Services
- Experience working with big data technologies, including Hadoop, BigQuery, Hive, Impala, and Kafka (preferred)
- Familiarity with AI, machine learning, computer vision, and applied mathematics
- Exposure to Industry 4.0 applications such as big data, autonomous robots, system integration, cloud computing, additive manufacturing, and augmented reality
- Experience in automation and control systems is an advantage
