What Does a Design Technology Teacher Do?
A Design Technology Teacher empowers students to think critically and creatively by delivering practical, design-based instruction aligned with the National Curriculum for England. This includes teaching skills in CAD, product design, engineering principles, innovation, and manufacturing techniques through hands-on learning at KS3, GCSE, and A-Level stages.
What Are the Key Responsibilities?
- Deliver engaging lessons in Design Technology across Key Stages 3 to 5
- Plan, prepare, and assess work that meets curriculum standards and supports differentiated learning
- Integrate digital tools such as CAD/CAM, 3D printing, and prototyping in classroom activities
- Encourage innovation, problem-solving, and collaboration among students
- Maintain and manage workshop tools, equipment, and safety standards
- Support student development through STEM projects, competitions, and exhibitions
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure cross-curricular links and thematic learning
- Contribute to the school’s extra-curricular program and wider DT initiatives
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress and performance
- Participate in school events, CPD training, and performance reviews
- Promote a positive, inclusive, and high-expectation learning environment
What Skills Are Needed for a Design Technology Teacher in Dubai?
Education:
- B.Ed in Design Technology or relevant subject, or a bachelor’s degree with PGCE / PGDE or equivalent
Experience:
- Proven experience teaching Design Technology to GCSE and A-Level (KS4/KS5)
- Experience with British or international curriculum frameworks preferred
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of materials, design processes, digital fabrication, and safety protocols
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Fusion 360) and 3D printing tools
- Ability to deliver practical and theoretical instruction in product design and innovation
- Excellent classroom management, organization, and planning abilities
- Creative, student-focused approach to teaching
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
